All off-season, the Jets were bold and brash, broadcasting to whoever would listen that they were destined to become champions. But they did not resemble the championship football team that the players and the coaches had made themselves out to be.

Ravens Defeat Jets, 10-9

On Monday night, the Jets fell, 10-9, to the Baltimore Ravens, which had put Jets Coach Rex Ryan and his team back in their place, at least for now, during the team’s first game at New Meadowlands Stadium.

The game was marred by penalties. The Jets’ offense was impotent against Baltimore’s snarling front seven, failing on third-down opportunities. Mark Sanchez threw for only 74 yards, completing 10 of 21
passes. The Jets had six first downs, tying them for the fewest in team history.

However, the defense lived up to the billing, mostly. The secondary, aside form Darrelle Revis, showed its holes, and Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco passed for 248 yards, completing 20 of 38 passes with an interception.
