Liverpool v Newcastle United match preview

Team News
Liverpool striker Luis Suárez is unavailable for the visit of Newcastle as he serves a one-match suspension. That could give Andy Carroll the chance to make back-to-back league starts for the first time since the beginning of November. Captain Steven Gerrard returned from a two-month absence with a substitute appearance on Boxing Day, but is likely to start on the bench again. Newcastle could keep faith with Mike Williamson after he started for the first time since August in the 2-0 win at Bolton. Demba Ba, who scored twice at the Reebok, is a doubt, which would be a blow for the visitors.

Match Notes
All eyes will be on Andy Carroll, should he play. The former Newcastle striker has fumbled his way through injuries and poor form since arriving last January for £35 million. By contrast his replacement, Demba Ba, has flourished after signing on a free transfer. Newcastle have rediscovered the art of winning but may find Liverpool at Anfield too tough a nut to crack. Betting: Home 4-7, Away 5-1, Draw 11-4. Stat of the game: Liverpool have gone 13 games since they last conceded more than one goal, the best run in the Premier League. John Ley's predicition: Liverpool 2 Newcastle United 1.
