Kenny Dalglish’s men will face Roberto Mancini’s table-topping Manchester City on Sunday November 27, but have been ordered to travel to Stamford Bridge to play the League Cup tie against Chelsea on Tuesday November 29.

Liverpool asked for the tie to be moved 24 hours to the Wednesday but were told they would be unable to change the date because Tottenham are playing a Europa League game on the same evening and the Metropolitan police would be unable to police both events. The Reds have pursued many options as they are reluctant to play two such important fixtures in as many days, but have so far seen every proposal rejected.
Liverpool asked for their quarter-final tie to be delayed until January, on the same date as the reserved dates for the semi-final, but the Football League rejected this, citing possible fixture congestion. Another suggestion put forward by the club was to move the fixture with Manchester City on Sunday 27 back to Saturday 26 to give the players an extra day's rest, but they have so far been left frustrated in their attempts.
