The Spain Under-20 international has joined the Blues in a deal worth €5 million (£4.36m) after failing to make his mark at the Catalan club, where he had been since 2004. The La Liga and Champions League holders have secured the option to re-sign the player over the next two years, and Romeu has refused to rule out a second stint at Camp Nou.
"You never know what could happen in the future, I will always support Barca and I hope someday I can return there," he said at a press conference. "But right now, what I want is to succeed at Chelsea and be fine there."The 19-year-old expressed his joy at earning a switch to the London-based and club and spoke of his relief that a deal has finally been completed.
"I always said that my first option was Barcelona, but a time comes in which an opportunity like this comes, and a coach wants to bet on you, so you have to take it. I think I could not let this one go," he added.
"The two clubs had been talking about this subject for weeks and all I wanted was it to be over as quickly as possible so I could be focused here [the U20 World Cup], which is what interests me right now."
Quizzed on his new challenge, Romeu said he thinks he can "learn a lot" at Chelsea, adding: "This is a great club, with players of an enormous quality and a coach of a very high level. What I want is to keep improving as a footballer there.
"Everything that can happen to me there will be for the best."Barcelona's buy-back option will allow them to sign Romeu for €10m (£8.7m) next summer, or for €15m (£13.1m) in the summer of 2013.
